The sediment filter is usually the first stage in a water filtration system. It serves to remove visible dirt particles such as mud, rust and sand from the water. A melt-blown filter cartridge has a multi-layer structure and is self-bonded, thus not making use of a chemical binder.

Sediment filters are rated by a micron number or aperture size which refers to the largest dirt particle that will pass through the filter. A micron is 0.001 millimeters. The most common sediment filters available are 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50(micron).

Recommendations:
- Use successively finer aperture filters in series for distributing the dirt load and achieving the best result.
- Replace the filter if it is visually dirty or water flow or pressure is reduced.
- Consider using a back washable media filter as a more sustainable alternative to single-use plastic cartridges.
