This publication is a history of Durban during the time of the Anglo-Boer War (18991902). What difference did the war make to Durban? What impact did it have on the political, military, social and economic life of the town? The unique pattern of events in Durban during these times is indeed a rich one involving subjects as diverse as guns and cattlemen, ambulance trains and contraband, concentration camps and volunteer regiments. Several themes are presented with Durban viewed as a gateway: a gateway to be defended, for warriors to pass through from both sides and a gateway to the outside world and to the hinterland of the country.
