Against Convenience

Ever find yourself overwhelmed with the speed of modern life?

From cards summoned on demand to food ordered and dates planned by way of apps, humans have always prized innovations that make life easier. But that appreciation of convenience has evolved into an obsession. This book is a call to question the cost and efficiency of convenience and explore whether a slower approach - though less convenient - can lead to a more colourful life?

Against Convenience explores the effect this obsession is having on us and what options we have as consumers and citizens. How do we discern which conveniences are false promises? How do we live without them? And what difference would it make anyway?

This book is not a righteous tirade but an exploration of feelings that many of us share: the overwhelm at the complexity and speed of modern life, the blind reaching for convenience as an antidote, the guilt or emptiness that follows. And then it investigates how each of us can examine our own behaviour, identify those conveniences that no longer serve us, and leave them behind in favour of more sustainable options that give our lives more meaning.
