Black v White

For decades, the Rand Stadium played host to the (all-white) giants of local and international football. Shortly before the 1976 Soweto riots, the venue served as the setting for an explosive black versus white fixture in this, one of the most segregated societies on the planet. Jack Taylor (OBE), who blew the whistle that night, refereed the World Cup final the previous year. But nothing could have prepared him for the night the beautiful game came of age in this troubled land. The match was coloured by plenty of on-field controversy (and a full-blown riot in the stands). And yet, the sight of tens of thousands of spectators (of all races) also celebrating together marked seminal moment in the history of South African sport. General Motors had thrown its weight behind a non-racial national football tournament that would transform the sport - and country - in a few turbulent weeks. The Champion of Champions tournament brought clubs from across the racial divide together for the first time and provided the tantalising prospect of determining how South Africa's different nations would match up on the field.
