Description

The BMT Dual Motor Driver L298 Screw is a two-channel DC motor driver module based on the L298N dual H-bridge driver IC. It is designed to provide convenient control of two DC motors, including independent control of motor direction and speed when connected to a suitable microcontroller.

The module can be used with DC motors in robotics, smart-car projects, automation systems and other applications where a microcontroller needs to control motors that require more current than the controller's GPIO pins can provide.

The L298N provides two independent H-bridge channels, allowing the connected motors to be driven forwards or backwards. The module also supports suitable control of a two-phase stepper motor.

The board supports a motor supply range specified from 5V to 35V, with the product description identifying typical motor applications in the 7-24V DC range. Each bridge is specified for up to 2A peak current, subject to appropriate thermal and operating conditions.

A dedicated logic supply and control inputs allow the module to interface with suitable microcontrollers, including systems using 3.3V MCU control where the required logic-level interface is properly implemented.

Dual H-Bridge Motor Control

The L298N contains two independent H-bridge driver circuits. Each bridge can control the direction of a connected DC motor.

This allows a suitable microcontroller to control:

  • Motor direction
  • Motor start and stop
  • Motor speed using PWM
  • Two motors independently

For a typical two-wheel robot, one motor can be connected to each driver channel, allowing the controller to drive the vehicle forwards, backwards and turn by varying the direction and speed of each motor.

DC Motor Applications

The module is designed to drive two suitable DC motors. The motor supply is connected separately from the microcontroller logic circuitry, allowing the driver to handle motor loads without attempting to power the motors directly from microcontroller GPIO pins.

Suitable applications include:

  • Robot cars
  • Two-wheel robots
  • Four-wheel robots using suitable motor arrangements
  • Automated mechanisms
  • Conveyor prototypes
  • Motorised models
  • Small mobile platforms
  • DIY machinery
  • Educational robotics
Motor Speed Control

Motor speed can be controlled by applying an appropriate PWM signal to the driver's enable/control inputs from a compatible microcontroller.

PWM allows the average power delivered to the motor to be varied, providing control over motor speed.

The actual speed achieved will depend on the motor, supply voltage, mechanical load, gearbox and PWM configuration.

Motor Direction Control

The two H-bridge channels allow the polarity applied to each connected motor to be controlled electronically.

By changing the appropriate control inputs, a compatible microcontroller can command a motor to:

  • Rotate forwards
  • Rotate backwards
  • Stop

This makes the module particularly useful for robotic vehicles where independent wheel direction is required.

Stepper Motor Support

In addition to DC motors, the L298N's dual H-bridge architecture can be used for suitable two-phase stepper motor applications.

Stepper-motor operation requires appropriate sequencing of the control signals, normally handled by the connected microcontroller or control software.

5V Output

The module provides a 5V output interface intended to supply suitable low-power circuitry where applicable.

The available output should be used within the module's electrical limitations and should not be assumed to provide enough current to power high-current peripherals, motors or servos.

Microcontroller Compatibility

The driver can be controlled by a wide range of suitable microcontrollers and development boards.

Possible controllers include:

  • Arduino-compatible boards
  • ESP32 development boards
  • AVR microcontrollers
  • ARM-based development boards
  • Other embedded controllers with suitable digital/PWM outputs

The supplied information indicates support for 3.3V MCU control, but the control interface should be checked against the specific microcontroller being used to ensure correct logic-level operation.

Applications

The BMT Dual Motor Driver L298N is suitable for:

  • Arduino robot cars
  • Smart-car projects
  • Robotics
  • Educational robotics
  • DIY automation
  • DC motor control
  • Two-wheel drive vehicles
  • Four-wheel drive robot platforms
  • Motorised prototypes
  • Mechanical automation
  • Stepper motor experiments
  • Embedded control systems
  • STEM projects
  • Electronics prototyping
Wiring and Power Considerations

The motor supply and logic supply should be connected according to the module's specifications. Motors should be powered through the driver rather than directly from microcontroller I/O pins.

When selecting a power supply, consider the stall current of the connected motors, as motors can draw significantly more current during startup or when mechanically loaded than during normal unloaded operation.

The stated 2A per bridge is a peak rating; actual continuous current capability depends on operating conditions, motor load, supply voltage, PCB cooling and the thermal characteristics of the L298N.

Note: Arduino/microcontroller board, motors, power supply, wiring and other accessories are not included unless specifically stated. The L298N can dissipate significant heat under higher-current operation, so appropriate thermal management and operating limits should be observed.
