Description
The BMT MAX30102 Oxygen/Heart/Blood Sensor Module is a compact optical sensing module based on the MAX30102 integrated sensor. It is designed for use in electronics, embedded systems, Arduino projects and other applications requiring optical measurement of heart rate and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2).
The module combines red and infrared LED illumination with a photodetector and signal-processing circuitry to allow a compatible microcontroller to collect pulse and blood oxygen-related measurements. Communication with the host controller is provided through an I2C interface, making it convenient to integrate into development boards and custom electronics projects.
Measuring approximately 16 x 21mm and weighing only around 2.5g, the module is suitable for compact prototypes and wearable-style development projects.

The module provides several connections for power, communication and access to the MAX30102 circuitry.
VIN
The VIN terminal is the main power supply input for the module. The supplied specifications indicate an input range of 1.8-5V.
SCL
The SCL connection provides the clock signal for the module's I2C communication interface.
SDA
The SDA connection provides the bidirectional data connection used for communication between the MAX30102 module and the host microcontroller.
INT
The INT pin provides the interrupt signal from the MAX30102 sensor. This can be used by the host controller to respond to sensor events without continuously polling the device.
RD
The RD connection is associated with the red LED grounding terminal of the MAX30102. According to the supplied information, this terminal is generally not connected during normal module operation.
IRD
The IRD connection is associated with the infrared LED grounding terminal of the MAX30102. This terminal is also generally not connected during normal module operation according to the supplied information.
GND
The GND terminal provides the common ground connection between the sensor module and the host electronics.
I2C CommunicationThe MAX30102 module communicates with a compatible microcontroller using the I2C bus. This requires the appropriate SCL and SDA connections.
The I2C interface makes the module suitable for development platforms and embedded controllers that support I2C communication, including many Arduino-compatible boards and other microcontroller systems.
Heart Rate and Pulse MonitoringThe MAX30102 is designed to detect optical changes associated with pulsatile blood flow. A suitable software library and host controller can process the sensor data to develop applications involving heart-rate monitoring.
This makes the module useful for educational projects, wearable prototypes and experimentation with optical pulse sensing.
Blood Oxygen and SpO2 ProjectsThe MAX30102 also uses red and infrared optical measurements for applications involving blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) estimation.
The sensor module itself provides the optical data; appropriate software algorithms and signal processing are required to calculate useful readings. Results can be affected by sensor placement, movement, ambient light, skin contact and other factors.
Important: This module is intended for electronics development, experimentation and prototyping. It is not a certified medical device and should not be relied upon for medical diagnosis, treatment or clinical decisions.
Compact DesignThe approximately 16 x 21mm PCB provides a convenient platform for incorporating the MAX30102 into compact electronics projects.
Its low weight of approximately 2.5g makes it particularly useful for:
- Wearable prototypes
- Portable electronics
- Robotics projects
- Arduino projects
- Embedded sensor systems
- Experimental health-monitoring devices
The BMT MAX30102 Sensor Module can be used in a variety of electronics and development projects, including:
- Heart-rate monitoring prototypes
- Pulse sensing
- SpO2 development projects
- Wearable electronics
- Fitness-monitoring prototypes
- Arduino projects
- Microcontroller projects
- IoT sensor systems
- Portable monitoring devices
