Some braais feed people. Some fire pits warm the circle. The BraaiBoss Orbital Fire Pit & Braai Grill looks at both jobs, adds a manual rotisserie, and decides Saturday needs a little theatre.

The 61.5cm enamel-coated cooking grill gives chops, wors and chicken proper room to move without requiring advanced meat-placement mathematics. Above it, the 29.5cm warming grill keeps round one warm while the next batch gets acquainted with the fire. Nobody invited cold wors.

Then there is the manual rotisserie with locking mechanism. Turn the spit by hand, rotate the food exactly where you want it, then engage the lock to hold the spit securely in position between turns. Hands-on rotisserie cooking, yes. Standing there permanently attached to the handle like you are guarding the Webb Ellis Cup, no. The adjustable rotisserie height lets you raise or lower the spit relative to the fire as the heat changes. The flames may supply the heat, but they do not get to chair every meeting.

Once the fire is out and the Orbital is completely cool, the supplied 600D protective cover with PVC coating inside and out helps protect it against dust and moisture between braais. South African weather has never shown much respect for closing time.

WHY THE ORBITAL STARTS A CROWD

COOKING GRILL: 61.5cm enamel-coated cooking space gives chops, wors and chicken room for a proper spread, so the tongs can cook instead of directing traffic.

MANUAL ROTISSERIE & LOCKING MECHANISM: Turn the spit by hand, then lock it securely into position between rotations. You control the turn; the spectator committee can continue controlling absolutely nothing.

MATERIAL: Carbon steel construction gives the Orbital a sturdy, practical backbone for fireside cooking without pretending it has been commissioned by the defence force.

HIGH-TEMPERATURE PAINTED FINISH: The black finish suits life around the heat and looks sharp while smoke, marinade and Saturday do their very best.
