Description
The pursuit of efficiency has been a consistent goal throughout human history, driven by the desire to make the best use of available resources. In high-risk communities such as those in Cape Town, South Africa, efficiency is crucial for survival. However, this focus on efficiency has had negative consequences, particularly for people of color in previously disadvantaged communities, reducing their resilience and making it difficult for them to cope with change and crises.
In contrast, nature is highly resilient, albeit less efficient. Many plant seeds are dispersed, but only a few germinate, and many animals have short lifespans, which may seem like a wasteful use of resources. Humans, however, can use insight and foresight to make proactive decisions, bringing about positive changes in their lives and communities.
Diversity is a crucial element for building resilience in natural systems. From a human perspective, diversity may add complexity and redundancy. People of color can benefit from adopting a strategy similar to nature's resilience. When their environment changes, they must learn to adapt and position themselves to be the change they want to see in their lives and communities on the Cape Flats.
For positive change to occur, individuals who were once marginalized must take on key roles and sow positive seeds. Otherwise, their lives risk collapse. Unfortunately, people have lost their connection to the life-giving properties of seeds, which are powerful symbols of renewal and abundance in human life.
