How to Use:

Hair & Scalp: Massage 5-10 drops into the scalp and through the lengths. Leave on for 30-60 minutes or overnight, then wash out thoroughly.

Skin: Apply a small amount to clean skin and massage gently until absorbed. Blend with a lighter carrier oil for easier spreading.

Brows & Lashes: Apply a very small amount with a clean applicator. Avoid direct contact with the eyes.

About Cape Naturals Organic Castor Oil:

Castor oil is pressed from the seed of the castor plant, Ricinus communis. What separates it from almost every other beauty oil is its composition: it is roughly 85-90% ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid found in very few other plants. That is why castor oil feels noticeably thicker and more cushioned than argan, jojoba or coconut oil, why it clings to the hair shaft instead of running straight off, and why it has been a fixture of hair and skin routines for generations.

Cape Naturals Organic Castor Oil is made with Ecocert and USDA (NOP) certified organic castor oil. It is cold-pressed, hexane-free and refined to BP-quality purity. It is a single-ingredient product - there is nothing in the container but castor oil.

What the claims on this bottle actually mean:

Cold-pressed - Cheaper castor oil is extracted with heat or chemical solvents, because that pulls more oil out of the seed for less money. Cold pressing uses mechanical pressure only, at low temperature. The yield is lower and the oil costs more to produce, but the natural character of the oil is preserved. If an oil does not say cold-pressed, assume it is not.

Hexane-free - Hexane is a petroleum solvent used in industrial oil extraction to strip the last of the oil out of the pressed seed cake. Traces can carry through into the finished oil. Ours is never solvent-extracted, so there is no hexane involved at any stage of production.

BP-quality purity - BP stands for British Pharmacopoeia - the reference standard that defines purity for cosmetic and pharmaceutical grade materials. Our oil is refined to meet that specification. In practice that means a clean, consistent, low-odour oil with a pale colour and no sediment, batch after batch.

How to use it:

Scalp and hair - Part the hair in sections and massage 5-10 drops directly into the scalp with your fingertips, working in small circles for two to three minutes. Comb the rest through the lengths. Leave on for 30-60 minutes, or overnight with a towel or cap to protect your bedding. Shampoo out thoroughly - castor oil is thick and usually needs two washes.

Deep hair mask - Blend one part castor oil with two or three parts of a lighter oil such as coconut, sweet almond or grapeseed. Warm slightly between your palms, apply from mid-length to ends, and leave for an hour before washing. Once a week is plenty.

Ends and split ends - Rub a single drop between your palms and smooth over dry ends after styling. Use sparingly - too much will weigh the hair down.

Brows and lashes - Apply a very small amount with a clean spoolie or a cotton bud along the brow line, or at the lash line taking care to avoid the eye itself. Do this at night on clean, make-up-free skin. Rinse in the morning.

Beard - Work two to three drops through a clean, slightly damp beard, down to the skin underneath. Blend with a lighter oil if you prefer a less heavy finish.

Face and body - Apply a small amount to clean skin and massage until absorbed. On the face, most people find it works best blended with a lighter oil, or used only on dry patches. It is a slow-absorbing oil, which makes it well suited to massage.

Hands, cuticles, nails and heels - Massage a drop into each cuticle, or a small amount into dry heels before bed with socks over the top.

DIY and blending - Castor oil is a standard base for lip balms, salves, hair masks, brow serums and cold-process soap, where it contributes lather and hardness. A single ingredient with no additives means predictable results in a formulation.

Texture and blending notes:

Castor oil is deliberately thick - that is the point of it - but it does mean it spreads slowly on its own. Most people blend it. A ratio of one part castor oil to three parts of a lighter oil (coconut, sweet almond, grapeseed or jojoba) keeps the benefits and makes it far easier to apply and to wash out. Warming the blend briefly between your palms helps it distribute through hair.

Why a plastic drum instead of glass? - At one litre, glass is heavy, expensive to ship and a genuine hazard in a bathroom. The drum is food-grade, light-stable and re-sealable, and it is intended as a refill container - decant into a smaller glass bottle for daily use if you prefer.

Will it go off? - Castor oil is more stable than most carrier oils. Kept sealed, cool and out of direct sunlight it will comfortably see out its shelf life. Heat and light are what degrade it, not time on its own.

Can I use it on colour-treated or relaxed hair? - Yes - it is a single-ingredient oil with no additives. As with any product, patch test first and check with your stylist if you have recently had a chemical service.

Is it safe around the eyes? - It is intended for the lash line and brow area, applied carefully with a clean applicator. Avoid getting it in the eye itself. If you do, rinse with clean water.

Does it need to be diluted? - Not necessarily, but most people find it easier to work with when blended. Neat castor oil is thick and slow to spread, particularly on skin.
