Persian Abadeh, Zele Sultan Rug. This piece was handwoven in Abadeh, Iran.
This particular motif is one of the most original and recognisable Persian motifs. It comprises a bunch of large red rorses, either in a small vase of alone. The proportion of the vase to flowers, the size of the motif and the colours it is worked in may all vary, but essentially the design remains the same. The zeal-soltan originated in the Hamadan area, but since the turn of the century, it has spread throughout Iran to many weaving centres, including Abadeh.
