Counselling and Psychotherapy with Refugees

Integrating political, cultural, interpersonal and intrapsychic dimensions, this book is the first to tackle therapy with refugees, using a unique four-level approach explored in terms of the experiences of both client and therapist. Originally prompted by government dispersal policies and based on work carried out at the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, this comprehensive yet flexible framework for therapists encountering refugees in their practice is perfectly attuned to the special needs and circumstances of displaced and traumatised clients from different cultural and political backgrounds. Helpful information on working with interpreters and legal issues is also included. As counselling and therapy support for refugees now often has to be provided outside their established communities, this book is an essential tool for all therapists, counselling staff and students on such courses.
