But caring for wild birds is not just for our enjoyment. With rapid urbanisation, birds are finding it increasingly difficult to locate safe places to feed and nest. That's why it's so important to provide food, water, and natural nesting options like the Elaine's Birding Sisal Nesting Log.

Made from Agave sisalana, a plant native to Central America and now widespread in South Africa, these logs are sustainably sourced from the dried stalks of the sisal plant after it flowers and dies - transforming an invasive species into an eco-friendly home for birds.

Each log is crafted with care and fitted with protective metal end caps designed by Elaine's Birding to extend its lifespan and maintain its structural integrity.

The end caps provide several important advantages:

• Prevent damage from birds: Certain species, such as Barbets, tend to burrow through both ends of the log, often ruining it. The caps effectively deter this behaviour.
• Enhance durability: By shielding the log from sun and rain, the caps help resist weathering when suspended in trees.
• Maintain nesting integrity: By preventing unwanted excavation and environmental wear, the caps ensure your nesting log remains a safe, long-lasting home for cavity-nesting birds.

There are two types of birds that will use nesting logs - primary cavity nesters, which create their own nest holes (like Barbets and the Cardinal Woodpecker), and secondary cavity nesters, which use pre-existing cavities (such as Cape Glossy Starlings, Green Hoopoes, Grey Hornbills, and Sparrows).

You can hang the nesting log at any time of year, but it's best to install it in winter, allowing birds time to familiarise themselves with it before spring breeding season.

Installation Tips

• Choose a quiet, shaded area, away from predators like cats and dogs, and near food and water sources.
• Mount the log securely to the underside of a gently sloping branch or trunk using provided rope.
• Use a branch roughly equal in thickness to the log.
• Ensure the hole is at the top and facing away from the sun and prevailing rain.
• Ideal mounting height: 2-4 metres above ground.
• Installing multiple logs can reduce territorial competition among birds.
