Description
At last, Pieter-Dirk Uys, South Africa's most famous political satirist, entertainer and AIDS activist, has penned a memoir. He takes us back to his upbringing in apartheid South Africa, his early days in the theatre, and the birth of his alter ego, Evita Bezuidenhout. He revisits his political satire, which exposed the absurdities of Whites Only policies and the ridiculousness of the fear surrounding them.
It is a book of journeys, such as Evita Bezuidenhout's road trip through the country on the eve of the 1999 election, to educate the South African population on how to vote. Needless to say, one hilarious adventure after another unfolds along the dusty country by-roads.
Much of the book is about Uys's great passion: educating schoolchildren about the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Uys decided that it was time to go to war against ignorance, brandishing his own unique assortment of weapons - wigs, costumes... and a plastic penis!
In Elections and Erections you will laugh and cry at the eccentricities and vagaries of humankind, and if you weren't a Pieter-Dirk Uys fan before, you'll be one now. Don't say we didn't warn you, skattie!!
