Installation
If you power an LED strip with 5V for long periods it will damage the LEDS so use a 330 ohm resistor to prevent this. You can check the ratings for the LEDs you're using too, and use a bit of math to figure out what resistor to use to meet these ratings.
connect ground to both your power supply and microcontroller. Then connect the 5V line from the power supply to the red wire on the LED strip. Never, NEVER connect more than 5 Volts to the strip!
The main disadvantage of the 5V system is that voltage drop is a more significant limiting factor. However 5V systems are much more power efficient than 12V systems; a 5V linear system will always be 2.4 times more efficient than it's equivalent 12V system.
We recommend using stranded copper wire 10-22 gauge.
How to amplify 5V to 12V?

An open-collector output and a pull-up resistor will convert 5V signal to 12V. You can use an NPN transistor (and base resistor) to change your output to an open-collector output.
