Ginkgo is one of the oldest living tree species, and unlike many other medicinal herbs, ginkgo leaves are not frequently used in their crude state, but rather, in the form of a concentrated, standardised ginkgo biloba extract (GBE). Ginkgo may enhance blood circulation to the brain, which may promote mental alertness, clarity and concentration. It also promotes the delivery of oxygen and glucose to nerve cells, for nervous system support. In addition, Ginkgo is a rich source of antioxidant flavonoids and may be particularly helpful for health concerns associated with decreased blood flow to the brain.
