The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was, without a doubt, one of the most original aircraft for the design and aerodynamic layout of World War II. It was a revolutionary heavy fighter for the double beam fuselage, in which the two engines were installed, with the pilot placed in an advanced cockpit in the centre of the plane. Thanks to its two 1425 hp V-shaped 12-cylinder V-1710 engines each liquid-cooled, the P-38 reached a maximum speed of more than 660 km/h. It was armed with four 12.7 mm Browning machine guns and a Hispano M2 gun that guaranteed good firepower. Not very manoeuvrable compared to the single-engine fighters of the time but very robust and stable. It had as its strong point a very useful flight autonomy in the Pacific operations theatre or in the escort missions to long-haul bombers on the European skies. The P-38, for its characteristic shape and for its fearsome operational features, was dubbed by enemy pilots "the two-tailed devil".
