Neanderthals Among Us

Ever since a first Neanderthal skull was unearthed in 1856, both scientists and public have seen Neanderthals through a glass darkly - most often as a dull, brutish, primitive reflection of our own humanity. But fascination with our ancient cousins has never waned - how have we imagined Neanderthals in the modern world?

Neanderthals Among Us tells the story of our longstanding obsession - from the Natural History Museum to The Flintstones - weaving together fiction and film, museum exhibitions and school textbooks, painting, poetry, games, and even music. Humane, expert, intimate and compelling, Peter Sahlins offers a striking re-evaluation of Neanderthals and what they reveal about us.
