Description
Oxalic acid is a powerful, naturally occurring organic acid used across workshops and industrial settings, farms and beekeeping operations for cleaning, stain removal and restoration.
Its available in 1kg and 2.5kg on Takealot.
From removing rust and iron staining on metal to brightening weathered timber, cleaning suitable tiles and hard surfaces, and restoring outdoor tools and equipment,
Earth Lab Company Oxalic Acid Rust Bath offers a highly versatile concentrated cleaning solution. Its dry-crystal format allows you to prepare only the amount and strength required for each job, making it economical while supporting a more restore, reuse and reduce-waste approach.
At lower concentrations, Rust Bath can be used for lighter workshop and maintenance tasks such as surface rust marks, iron and tannin staining, weathered wood, porcelain, fibreglass, grout and other suitable acid-resistant surfaces. It may also be used for cleaning suitable beehive equipment surfaces, followed by thorough rinsing and complete drying.
At higher concentrations, it becomes a serious workshop and restoration product for rusted iron and steel, including tools, nuts, bolts, chains, brackets, machinery components, farm equipment and other metal restoration projects.
Rather than replacing stained, weathered or rusted items, Rust Bath helps bring usable materials back into service.
The concentrated powder format also avoids transporting large volumes of pre-diluted cleaner, allowing the user to mix only what is needed.
Choose the Strength for the Job
For light cleaning and maintenance at 1%, mix 10 g per litre. A 2.5 kg bucket makes up to 250 litres of working solution. This mild strength is suited to light iron staining, surface rust marks, tannin staining, weathered timber and general cleaning of suitable acid-resistant household, workshop and outdoor surfaces.
For mild cleaning at 3%, mix 30 g per litre. A 2.5 kg bucket makes approximately 83 litres. This gives additional cleaning power for more established iron staining, light rust, weathered wood, grout, porcelain, fibreglass and similar suitable surfaces.
For general cleaning and restoration at 5%, mix 50 g per litre. A 2.5 kg bucket makes approximately 50 litres. This is a useful all-round strength for noticeable rust staining, workshop cleaning, timber restoration and stubborn marks on suitable acid-resistant surfaces.
For a stronger 10% Rust Bath, mix 100 g per litre. A 2.5 kg bucket makes approximately 25 litres. This is the practical workshop strength for soaking rusty tools, nuts, bolts, chains, brackets and suitable iron or steel components.
For heavy rust and restoration work at 20%, mix 200 g per litre. A 2.5 kg bucket makes approximately 12.5 litres. This concentration is intended for severe rust on suitable iron and steel, antique tools and farm or workshop equipment. Prepare and use warm, as concentrated oxalic acid solutions may crystallise as they cool.
Typical Uses
Rust Bath can be used for rust and oxidation removal from suitable iron and steel; rusty hand tools, fasteners, chains and workshop parts; iron and tannin staining on timber; brightening weathered wood; rust staining on suitable porcelain, fibreglass, grout and concrete; selected outdoor furniture and equipment; farm and workshop restoration projects; and cleaning suitable beehive equipment surfaces.
How to Use
Dissolve the required amount of powder into warm water, approximately 30-50 C, while stirring.
Always add powder to water - never water to concentrated powder.
Make the solution up to the required final volume after the powder has dissolved. For metal parts, immerse or apply the solution and check progress periodically. Treatment time depends on the amount of rust, working strength, temperature and material being cleaned.
After treatment, rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely. Freshly cleaned bare iron or steel should be protected promptly with an appropriate oil, coating or finish to help prevent flash rust.
For stronger solutions, spent solution or residue can be neutralised carefully by adding sodium bicarbonate slowly in small portions until effervescence stops, followed by thorough rinsing.
Important Surface Information
Always test on a small inconspicuous area before widespread use.
Do not use on marble, limestone, travertine or other calcium-based stone, as acidic cleaners can etch these materials.
Exercise caution on aluminium, zinc, galvanised surfaces, plated metals, painted finishes and other acid-sensitive materials.
Do not mix with bleach, chlorine-based cleaners, ammonia or other cleaning chemicals.
Safety Information
Contains Oxalic Acid Dihydrate.
DANGER: Harmful if swallowed. Harmful in contact with skin. Causes serious eye damage. Wear suitable protective gloves and eye protection. Avoid breathing dust and use in a well-ventilated area. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Storage
Store tightly sealed in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture and incompatible chemicals.
