Schmincke Horadam Naturals Watercolour Paint - Madder Lake (15 ml)

A strongly translucent brownish red, this colour is made from the madder root using a historical recipe.

A unique fusion of watercolour and gouache, Schmincke Horadam Naturals are made exclusively using natural earth pigments, plant extracts, or plant resins. The range is 100% vegan and features 16 colours based on historical and naturally derived pigments.

Horadam Naturals have a matt finish and offer an authentic character. Colours are mostly semi-transparent with good lightfastness (15 colours with 3-5 stars lightfastness). They can be mixed and combined with watercolour and gouache and used straight from the tube or diluted with water.

The aspiration for a vegan and naturally formulated watercolour and gouache fusion, leads to properties that distinguish this paint from a pure watercolour or gouache. It therefore takes a certain amount of familiarisation and understanding of the characteristics that distinguish these colours. The natural pigments used in this range are sometimes slightly coarser in texture which results in a rougher, slightly granular surface effect. The consistency of the paints is a little thicker, so the colours do not flow as easily as watercolour and are more like gouache.
