Description

This book is Nokhanyo Nomakhwezi Mdzanga’s story of resilience. It outlines her struggles of raising a child with autism and how she bounced back and realised that having this child was her destiny. The author explains how her faith in God led her to a point of accepting her child’s condition and propelled her to participate in activities that promote autism education and advocacy. In writing this book, Nokhanyo noticed that her son’s life was intertwined with her own life history. Every experience which she had as she was growing up was preparation for this time.
Nokhanyo hopes that every parent who raises a child with a disability will relate to her emotional struggles and can gain hope and healing in the process. She intends through her writing for teachers to gain an in-depth understanding of how parents are challenged emotionally by their children’s condition and the implications thereof. It is also her wish that fathers who are emotionally absent in raising their children will read this book and get a sense of the trauma that mothers experience when they raise such children alone.
Nokhanyo would like to see the church community gain detailed insight of the experiences of parents raising children with autism. She further wants the department of education to understand the plight of these children, who are not able to access education because of the lack of teachers and public schools.
