Description
In the 1920s, African-American and West Indian sailors
brought copies of Marcus Garvey's newspaper the
Negro World and other publications to South Africa. His
work spread from the ports through communities of
workers around the country, where South Africans
adapted Garveyism to suit the politics of the era.
His ideas became a new intellectual link between blacks
Africans and the diaspora. Garvey's Universal Negro
Improvement Association (UNIA) spread through South
Africa and Namibia, where its members fueled the ranks
of early union movements and the ANC. His writings
inspired some of the earliest land reform protests in
South Africa.
This book is the first volume of his work compiled by his
wife Amy Jacques-Garvey, covering his thoughts on
power, poverty, radicalism and more.
Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica in 1887, but
achieved prominence as a PanAfricanist in the United
States where he founded the Negro World newspaper,
the Black Star Line shipping company, and the Negro
Factories Corporation to encourage trade between
black-owned businesses of the Americas and Africa. His
Universal Negro Improvement Association promoted his
ideas of economic freedom. He was convicted of mail
fraud in the US, imprisoned for two years, deported to
his home country, and died in London in 1840.
