The Routledge Handbook of Cultural Landscapes

The Routledge Handbook of Cultural Landscapes gathers twenty-eight contributions from transdisciplinary experts across six continents and twenty countries, including USA, UK, Italy, Finland, China, Thailand, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Lithuania, Germany and Canada, amongst others.

The evolution of heritage conservation has shifted from historically focusing on buildings and archeological sites to encompassing progressively larger geographic areas such as gardens and districts and, more recently, complex conceptual underpinnings known as cultural landscapes. With the increasing influence of environmental challenges such as climate change, technological advancements, and the need to better understand and interpret ethnography in place, cultural landscape practice has developed into the most important emerging field in heritage conservation.

Structured into five distinct themes, Origins and Precedents; Development of Cultural Landscape Practice; Practitioners, Projects and Places; Critiques of Practices in a Changing World; and Visionary and Futuristic Practices, this book draws together the progression of cultural landscape practice with illustrated global case studies of current practices, and concludes with an exploration of the challenges for future practice and potential directions.
