Description

The WVS ESP32-C6-Pico WiFi 6 Development Board is a compact and versatile entry-level development platform built around the ESP32-C6-MINI-1 module. Designed for IoT, embedded systems, smart home projects, industrial automation and rapid prototyping, it combines modern wireless connectivity with a wide range of peripheral interfaces.

At the heart of the board is a 32-bit single-core RISC-V processor running at up to 160 MHz, supported by 320KB ROM, 512KB high-performance SRAM, 16KB low-power SRAM and 4MB Flash memory. This provides a capable platform for developing connected embedded applications while maintaining a compact form factor.

The board integrates WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5 and IEEE 802.15.4 wireless communication, providing support for applications using Zigbee 3.0 and Thread. Its size and interface arrangement are designed to be compatible with most of the Raspberry Pi Pico expansion board ecosystem, making it easy to expand projects with compatible accessories and HATs.

For flexible hardware integration, the board provides 20 multifunction GPIO pins and 7 additional expanded IO pins, together with interfaces including USB OTG, SPI, I2C, UART, ADC and PWM. An onboard MP28164 high-efficiency buck-boost DC-DC converter provides load current of up to 2A for reliable power management.

The castellated module design also allows the board to be soldered directly onto custom carrier boards, making it suitable for both development and integration into custom hardware projects.

Wireless Connectivity

The ESP32-C6-Pico provides several wireless communication technologies in one development platform. Integrated WiFi 6 enables wireless network connectivity, while Bluetooth 5 provides support for compatible Bluetooth applications.

The integrated IEEE 802.15.4 radio further expands the board's capabilities for low-power wireless networking and supports technologies such as Zigbee 3.0 and Thread. This combination makes the board suitable for experimenting with different IoT communication standards.

GPIO and Peripheral Interfaces

The board provides 20 multifunction GPIO pins, allowing developers to connect and control a wide range of external components. A further 7 expanded IO pins provide additional connectivity for supported applications.

Available peripheral functionality includes:

  • USB OTG
  • SPI
  • I2C
  • UART
  • ADC
  • PWM
  • Multifunction GPIO

This selection of interfaces allows the board to communicate with sensors, displays, control devices, storage modules and other electronic peripherals.

Expanded IO Control

The additional EXIO1 to EXIO7 pins are controlled through the onboard TCA9554PWR interface. These expanded IO functions can be configured and controlled using the appropriate software libraries and example code.

Supported functions include:

  • TCA9554PWR initialization
  • Register read and write operations
  • EXIO mode configuration
  • Individual and multiple EXIO control
  • EXIO input-level reading
  • EXIO output-level setting
  • EXIO output toggling

Important: The corresponding library files are required before using EXIO1 to EXIO7.

Power Management

An onboard MP28164 high-efficiency buck-boost DC-DC converter provides power-management functionality with a load current capability of up to 2A. The buck-boost design allows the power system to accommodate different operating requirements while helping maintain stable operation.

The ESP32-C6 platform also supports multiple low-power operating states, allowing developers to optimise the balance between communication requirements, performance and power consumption.

Raspberry Pi Pico Expansion Compatibility

The ESP32-C6-Pico is designed to be compatible with most of the Raspberry Pi Pico expansion board ecosystem. This provides access to a wide range of compatible expansion hardware and makes it easier to add additional functionality during development.

This compatibility is particularly useful for prototyping IoT devices, experimenting with sensors and developing custom embedded systems.

Development

The board is suitable for ESP32-C6 development and can be integrated into projects requiring modern wireless connectivity and flexible peripheral control.

Its compact format, USB Type-C connection, GPIO options and Raspberry Pi Pico ecosystem compatibility make it suitable for both beginners working on development projects and experienced developers building more advanced IoT prototypes.

Castellated Module Design

The castellated edges allow the board to be soldered directly onto a custom carrier board. This feature makes the development board useful during the transition from prototype development to custom hardware integration.

Developers can design a carrier PCB around the module while retaining the ESP32-C6 processing and wireless functionality.
