Description

The WVS CP2102 Micro USB to UART Board is a compact USB-to-TTL serial communication module designed to provide a convenient connection between a computer and microcontrollers, development boards and other UART-compatible electronic systems.

The board features the CP2102 single-chip USB-to-UART bridge, which converts USB communication from a computer into UART serial signals. Its Micro USB interface provides a familiar connection for development and programming applications, while the onboard voltage-selection jumper allows the module to provide 3.3V or 5V VCCIO.

Three onboard LED indicators provide visual feedback for TXD, RXD and POWER, making it easier to monitor communication activity and confirm that the module is powered. The main UART signals, including TXD, RXD, RTS and CTS, are accessible through pinheaders, while additional connections are available through drilled holes.

The CP2102 supports a wide range of operating systems and provides USB 2.0 full-speed communication up to 12 Mbps. Its UART interface supports baud rates from 300 bps to 1 Mbps, configurable data formats and hardware or X-On/X-Off handshaking.

With its compact breakout-board design and flexible connection options, this module is suitable for embedded development, firmware programming, serial debugging, electronics prototyping and USB-to-UART communication.

USB to UART Communication

The CP2102 acts as a bridge between a computer's USB port and a target device's UART interface. This allows a PC to communicate with microcontrollers and other serial devices without requiring a dedicated RS-232 interface.

The module can be used for:

  • Serial communication
  • Firmware programming
  • MCU development
  • Serial console access
  • Embedded system debugging
  • Device configuration
  • Development board communication
  • Electronics prototyping
UART Connections

When connecting the module to a microcontroller, the UART signals should be connected according to their signal direction:

  • VCCIO: Select 3.3V or 5V using the onboard jumper according to the target system.
  • GND: Connect to the target device's GND.
  • TXD: Connect to the MCU RX pin.
  • RXD: Connect to the MCU TX pin.
  • RTS: Connect to the MCU CTS pin when hardware flow control is required.
  • CTS: Connect to the MCU RTS pin when hardware flow control is required.

For basic UART communication, TXD, RXD and GND are generally the primary connections required.

3.3V and 5V Voltage Selection

The module supports 3.3V or 5V VCCIO output. Since the module is powered through the USB interface, the onboard jumper is used to select the required VCCIO voltage.

The selected voltage should be compatible with the target MCU or electronic circuit before making the connection.

Important: Selecting an incorrect voltage for the connected target system may result in improper operation or damage to connected components.

LED Indicators

Three onboard LEDs provide useful visual feedback:

  • TXD LED: Indicates transmit activity.
  • RXD LED: Indicates receive activity.
  • POWER LED: Indicates that the board is receiving power.

These indicators can assist with troubleshooting and monitoring serial communication during development.

CP2102 Features

The onboard CP2102 integrates the USB-to-UART functionality into a single chip. It includes an integrated power-on reset circuit, voltage regulator and 1024-byte EEPROM, reducing the need for additional external components.

The USB function controller is USB 2.0 full-speed compliant, supporting communication speeds of up to 12 Mbps. The UART supports configurable data formats, multiple baud rates and different handshaking methods.

UART Data Formats

The UART interface supports flexible serial communication settings, including:

  • Data Bits: 5, 6, 7 or 8
  • Stop Bits: 1, 1.5 or 2
  • Parity: Odd, even or no parity
  • Baud Rate: 300 bps to 1 Mbps
  • Flow Control: Hardware or X-On/X-Off
  • Event Character: Supported

The module also provides a 576-byte receive buffer and 640-byte transmit buffer.

Operating System Support

The module is designed to support a variety of operating systems and driver environments, including:

  • Windows 7
