Description

The WVS CP2102 Type-C USB to UART Board is a versatile USB to TTL UART communication module designed to provide reliable serial communication between a computer and microcontrollers, development boards and other UART-based electronic systems.

Using the CP2102 USB-to-UART interface, the module converts USB data from a computer into UART serial data and vice versa. It features a modern USB Type-C connector and can provide a selectable 3.3V or 5V VCCIO output, allowing it to interface with a variety of digital electronics.

The module is powered directly through USB and includes an onboard jumper for selecting the required 3.3V or 5V logic/output voltage. Three onboard LED indicators provide convenient visual feedback for TXD, RXD and power, making the module easier to monitor during development and troubleshooting.

The communication pins are conveniently provided on pinheaders, including TXD, RXD, RTS and CTS. Additional pins are accessible through drilled holes, allowing the module to be connected to custom circuits and prototype boards.

The CP2102 supports a wide range of operating systems and offers USB 2.0 full-speed communication, UART baud rates from 300 bps up to 1 Mbps, configurable data formats and hardware or software handshaking. Its compact and flexible design makes it suitable for embedded development, firmware programming, serial debugging and general USB-to-UART communication.

USB to UART Communication

The CP2102 provides a convenient bridge between a computer's USB interface and a UART-based electronic system. This allows developers to communicate with microcontrollers and other serial devices using a computer's USB port.

Typical applications include:

  • Serial data communication
  • Microcontroller programming
  • Firmware development
  • Serial console access
  • Debugging embedded systems
  • Development board communication
  • Configuration of UART-based devices
  • PC-to-MCU communication
UART Interface

The module provides several UART signals for flexible serial communication:

  • GND: Connects to the ground of the target system.
  • TXD: Connects to the MCU RX input.
  • RXD: Connects to the MCU TX output.
  • RTS: Connects to the MCU CTS input.
  • CTS: Connects to the MCU RTS output.

For standard UART communication, TXD and RXD are typically connected to the corresponding receive and transmit pins of the target device, with a common ground connection.

The RTS and CTS connections provide hardware flow-control functionality when required by the application.

3.3V and 5V Selection

The board supports 3.3V or 5V VCCIO output. The module is powered from the USB connection, while the onboard jumper is used to select the required voltage.

Before connecting the module to a target circuit, select the appropriate voltage according to the target device's electrical requirements. Using an incorrect voltage may cause damage to connected electronics.

LED Indicators

Three onboard LEDs provide convenient status information:

  • TXD LED: Indicates transmit activity
  • RXD LED: Indicates receive activity
  • POWER LED: Indicates that the module is powered

These indicators can be particularly useful during serial communication testing and debugging.

Operating System Support

The module is designed to work with a range of operating systems and driver environments, including:

  • Windows
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11
  • Windows XP
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows CE
  • macOS
  • Linux
  • Android

Driver support and compatibility may depend on the operating system version and the software being used.

CP2102 Features

The integrated CP2102 provides several functions designed to simplify USB-to-UART implementation. It includes an onboard power-on reset circuit and voltage regulator, as well as integrated EEPROM.

The USB interface is USB 2.0 full-speed compliant, while the UART interface supports configurable data formats and baud rates up to 1 Mbps.

No external crystal or external resistors are required for the USB-to-UART interface operation.

Physical Connections

The board provides pinheader connections for the main UART signals, while additional connection points are available through drilled holes. This makes it possible to connect the module to breadboards, prototype boards and custom electronic circuits.

The drilled-hole pin connections use a pitch compatible with universal prototype boards, providing additional flexibility during hardware development.
